Welcome to Aurora’s Jewels of the Arctic expedition. Journey from Svalbard to East Greenland as the Arctic shifts towards autumn and darkness returns to the night sky. Search Svalbard’s fjords and tundra for polar bears, walrus, seabirds and reindeer before crossing the wildlife-rich Greenland Sea. In East Greenland, explore a flexible range of glacier-lined fjords, walk across tundra turning russet and gold, and Zodiac-cruise among monumental icebergs. With clear skies and a little luck, evenings away from artificial light may reveal the aurora borealis shimmering above this wild coast—an atmospheric finale to days shaped by wildlife, ice, geology and Greenlandic Inuit culture.

Dia 1: chegada a Oslo
Having made your way to Oslo, walk the short distance to your group hotel. Upon arrival at your included hotel, please visit the Aurora Expeditions hospitality desk to collect your luggage cabin tags and to speak with our ground operations team, who may have information to share with you about pre-embarkation or to provide you with information about where to dine, withdraw cash or purchase last minute items from a local pharmacy or supermarket.
O restante do tempo é livre. Todas as refeições de hoje ficam por sua conta.
Hospedagem: hotel em Oslo (a confirmar)
Dia 2: voo para Longyearbyen, embarque
This morning, please ensure your cabin luggage is fitted with cabin tags clearly labelled with your name and cabin number. Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before walking to the airport for our charter flight to Longyearbyen for embarkation. Any valuables or personal items should be kept on you throughout the day. In Longyearbyen, explore the town on a guided tour.
After the tour, you will be transferred directly to the pier to embark in the late afternoon. Settle into your cabin before attending important safety briefings and enjoy the thrill of departure as we ‘throw the lines’ and set sail.
Observação: a excursão depende do horário de chegada do nosso voo fretado a Longyearbyen.
Dias 3 a 5: Svalbard
As summer gives way to autumn, Svalbard takes on a different character. The light softens, the tundra begins to change colour and the first hours of darkness return. Our experienced Expedition Team will shape each day around weather, sea ice, wildlife and the latest local information, choosing the most rewarding opportunities rather than following a fixed list of landing sites.
Zodiac cruises may trace glacier fronts and sheltered bays, while guided walks cross tundra, raised beaches and fossil-rich polar desert. Historic camps and trappers’ huts reveal the human stories layered into this apparently untouched wilderness, and the lower autumn light can bring remarkable depth to the mountains and ice.
We remain alert for walrus at coastal haul-outs, whales and seals in productive waters, reindeer grazing on the tundra and arctic foxes patrolling the shore. Seabirds are beginning their seasonal transition, while polar bears remain an unpredictable possibility throughout the archipelago.
If you have selected an optional activity such as kayaking, we will aim to offer it whenever conditions allow. Guided walks, Zodiac excursions and the possibility of a polar plunge make the most of each expedition day.
Dias 6 e 7: Mar da Groenlândia
As we sail from Svalbard towards East Greenland, spend time on deck searching for whale blows, seals and seabirds such as northern fulmars and Brünnich’s guillemots. We may also encounter drifting sea ice, its appearance and extent determined by winds and currents.
These ocean days are part of the expedition experience. Our experts will share talks on wildlife, ice, Greenlandic culture and polar exploration, while the growing hours of darkness signal our passage into the Arctic autumn. If skies are clear, we may begin watching for the first flickers of the aurora after nightfall.
Dias 8 a 13: Leste da Groenlândia
By early autumn, East Greenland can offer a compelling mix of navigable fjords, drifting ice and deepening twilight. Our Expedition Team will use current ice, weather and wildlife information to shape the route each day, with all landings and Zodiac cruises subject to permits, quotas, local agreements and site availability.
Depending on conditions, exploration may range from the fjords around Tasiilaq in the south to Scoresbysund and towards Kong Oscar Fjord farther north. Ittoqqortoormiit may be possible when ice, scheduling and community arrangements align, but no named destination is guaranteed. The freedom to alter course allows us to seek the strongest experience available.
Glacier-fed waterways, striped mountains and drifting icebergs create exceptional opportunities for Zodiac cruising and photography. On suitable shores, we may hike across tundra turning red, amber and gold, climb to panoramic viewpoints or examine geological formations that reveal the deep history of this remarkable landscape.
We remain watchful for humpback and fin whales, seals and seabirds along the coast. On land, musk oxen and arctic hare may appear in the northern fjord country. Wildlife encounters are never predictable, and every sighting is approached carefully and on the animals’ terms.
Human stories are inseparable from East Greenland. Archaeological remains and historic sites speak to earlier settlement and exploration, while present-day communities carry forward a living Greenlandic Inuit culture. Any community encounter will take place only where it is welcomed and operationally possible.
After the long daylight of summer, darkness is returning to East Greenland. When skies are clear and solar activity aligns, the ship’s remote position away from urban light offers the chance to see the aurora borealis ripple above mountains, fjords and icebergs. Sightings can never be guaranteed, but every clear evening brings a reason to step outside and look up.
Dia 14: Estreito da Dinamarca
Crossing the Denmark Strait towards Iceland, we scan for whale blows and seabirds riding the ocean winds. The Expedition Team continues the story of the voyage with talks on wildlife, ice, geology and Arctic history, while the crossing offers time to share photographs and reflect on our discoveries. After nightfall, clear conditions may offer another opportunity to watch for the northern lights over the open sea.
Dia 15: desembarque em Reykjavík
During the early morning, we cruise into Reykjavik and disembark at approximately 8.00 am. Farewell your Expedition Team and fellow passengers as we all continue our onward journeys. Transfer to Keflavik airport.
Note: At the conclusion of the voyage, we recommend booking flights departing after 12.00 pm on the day of disembarkation in case there are delays.

O navio
Perguntas frequentes
Aurora runs small expedition ships built for this work, with a large expedition team, rather than a big ship with a lecture programme bolted on. That is what lets the itineraries reach places larger vessels cannot, and change on the day when conditions suggest something better. The company traces its roots to Australian mountaineering and exploration, and a voyage is meant to feel personal and educational rather than like a resort at sea. Whether that is worth a premium over another operator depends on the ship and the departure, so compare the passenger count and the included activity list rather than the language.
It depends on the region. Penguin colonies and whales in the south, walrus haul outs and Arctic fox in the north, and tropical seabirds on the warmer itineraries. Carrying fewer guests is a real advantage here, because the ship can react to what the wildlife is actually doing rather than sticking to a schedule built months earlier. Nothing is guaranteed though. Wildlife moves and ice moves, and any operator promising you a specific sighting is overselling.
The itinerary is a plan rather than a promise. Landings are chosen on the day around weather, ice and where the wildlife is, and that flexibility is the product rather than a caveat on it. Expect direct contact with the expedition team, time ashore rather than time looking at the shore, and a schedule that changes. Do not expect a fixed list of sites delivered on cue.
Yes. Aurora is a Certified B Corporation, certified by B Lab in February 2024, which is an independent assessment of the company's own social and environmental performance. Aurora also works with Seatrees, Veritree and CleanHub, and aligns its reporting with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Those partnerships are real, but they are delivery partners whose project outcomes are verified, which is not the same as an audit of Aurora itself. The B Corp certification is the one that answers the question. Worth knowing too that Aurora stopped carbon offsetting in October 2025 and replaced it with an Ocean Regeneration programme, so older material describing offsets is out of date.
Yes to both, and the wording matters if you are comparing operators. AECO lists Aurora as a Full Member. IAATO has no category called full member. Its categories are Operator, Provisional Operator and Associate, and Aurora is listed as an Operator. That is the useful distinction. Operator status means a completed application, an operating record and ongoing compliance review, as against the Provisional Operator status a new company starts on and holds for up to three annual meetings. Between them IAATO and AECO set the standards on landing limits, wildlife distances, environmental conduct and safety.
The Ulstein X-BOW is the answer here. Instead of riding up and slamming down into a wave, the inverted bow cuts through it, which reduces both the impact and the pitching motion. On a Drake Passage crossing that is a real difference rather than a marketing one. There is a limit to it though. Better seakeeping is not the same as no motion. A rough Drake is still rough, and if you are prone to seasickness you should travel prepared.
Every ship carries a medical centre and a qualified doctor experienced in expedition and remote medicine, available around the clock. It is worth understanding what that covers. The ship's doctor handles acute illness and injury and stabilises anything serious. It is not a hospital, and evacuation from the polar regions takes days rather than hours, which is the whole reason the insurance requirement exists.
The Arctic is the region around the North Pole, spanning territory belonging to Norway, Greenland and Denmark, Iceland, Canada, the United States and Russia. Aurora sails to four of those areas. Svalbard, for glaciers and one of the most reliable polar bear regions on the planet. Greenland, for Inuit culture, big fjords and icebergs. Iceland, for volcanic landscape and seabird colonies. And the Canadian High Arctic, including the Northwest Passage. Russia appears in the geographic description of the Arctic but not in Aurora's itineraries.
Weather dependent, and nothing about it is guaranteed. Aurora aims to offer the plunge on every suitable voyage, but it comes down to weather, sea state, ice conditions and operational safety on the day. If conditions allow, the expedition team runs it and everyone else comes out to watch. If they do not, it does not happen, and that call belongs to the team rather than to the guests.
